Over the course of five years and in five different exhibitions, the Nobel Peace Center will explore what peace is, has been, and may become. The public is invited - together with artists, researchers, and other experts - to explore different perspectives, take part in the conversation, and contribute to reflection.

In this first exhibition, historical examples, philosophical texts, poetry, and artworks show how peace has been defined, practiced, and challenged throughout history.

Visitors can see parts of the extensive library of the Norwegian Nobel Institute for the first time, read historical peace treaties and texts by key thinkers, and listen to Nobel Peace Prize laureates speaking about their paths to peace. In addition, three contemporary video works are presented, expressing reflections on peace in today’s world.

In a world marked by war, climate change, authoritarian tendencies, and growing inequality, it is no longer enough to be “against war.” We must understand what it means to be for peace - as a practice, a concept, and a possibility.

"Don’t always call our peace plan a dream. Progress toward justice is surely not a dream; it is the law of civilization. (...) I wish you could invent a little pill to blow up all fortresses and barracks at a single stroke."
- Bertha von Suttner, in a letter to Alfred Nobel
