The Nobel Peace Prize to classrooms across the world
On Friday, October 11, it was announced that the Nobel Peace Prize for 2024 was awarded to Nihon Hidankyo from Japan. As soon as the school bells rang on Monday morning, a brand-new teaching program in English and Norwegian about this year's Nobel Peace Prize winner was ready for use in classrooms across Norway and around the world. The program introduces students to Nihon Hidankyo and highlights the significance of the organisation’s work for peace. Each year, the Nobel Peace Center's educators create such programs to support teachers who wish to incorporate the new prize into their lessons.
The Peace Prize Lesson consists of digitally accessible resources designed for students from age 13 to 18 years old. The program is flexible, allowing teachers to select the resources they wish to use, whether in full or in part. The lesson also includesvideo material produced in collaboration with NRK, seamlessly integrated into the curriculum.
“The educational programs about this year's Peace Prize are our most popular, and we anticipate reaching many hundreds of thousands of students, thanks to our efforts over recent years and the support of our valuable partners,” says Director of Education Bendik B. Egge. Last year, the Peace Prize lessons were downloaded by approximately 3,500 teachers.
The Peace Prize Lessons are a collaboration between the Nobel Peace Center, NRK Skole, and NRK Super. This year, the Nobel Peace Center is also partnering with Save the Children, alongside its long-term collaborator, the educational department of the City of Oslo. The resources are supported by Gyldendal and the Klaveness Foundation.
