Nobel Peace Prize laureates Maria Ressa and Shirin Ebadi will meet the children of last year’s laureate Narges Mohammadi at the Nobel Peace Conference in September, to discuss the rollback of women’s rights across the world. The conference programme launched today.

Four Nobel Peace Prize laureates are represented when some of the world’s strongest voices for women’s rights gather in Oslo for the Nobel Peace Conference “Woman – Life – Freedom” 5 September. Maria Ressa (Nobel Peace Prize 2021) and Shirin Ebadi (Nobel Peace Prize 2003) will meet Kiana and Ali Rahmani, the children of last year’s laurate, Narges Mohammadi, on stage at the Nobel Peace Center. Doctor and women’s rights advocate Denis Mukwege will also speak, together with former politician and activist Fawzia Koofi from Afghanistan, the former ICC prosecutor Fatou Bensouda and the young gender activist Karin Watson Ferrer, among more.

The annual Nobel Peace Conference marks the end of a year of events related to the latest Nobel Peace Prize, and this year’s conference is called “Woman – Life – Freedom” after the slogan used in the demonstrations in Iran in September 2022. The conference will look at the rollback of women’s rights internationally and discuss solutions to counter it.

“Developments for gender rights have moved in the wrong direction in many places around the world in recent years. At this year’s Nobel Peace Conference, we gather some of the world’s strongest advocates for women’s rights to discuss how we can turn the tide”, says Kjersti Fløgstad, Executive Director of the Nobel Peace Center.

Ali og Kiana Rahmani

Iran, Afghanistan and the world

The Iranian human rights activist Narges Mohammadi, who was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2023, remains incarcerated in Iran. She has been arrested 13 times and sentenced to more than 30 years in prison for her human rights activities. Behind the bars of Evin Prison she remains active, and it is expected that Kiana and Ali Rahmani will bring a message from their mother to the conference. The Nobel Peace Conference will discuss the situation for women in Iran and Afghanistan and will also look at how gender and reproductive rights are on a rollback in many parts of the world today, and discuss what ramifications this has for peace and security. For the full conference programme that was launched today, see the Nobel Peace Center’s website.
