The world has got a new, worthy Nobel Peace Prize laureate – a brave champion of peace and democracy, says Kjersti Fløgstad, Director of the Nobel Peace Center, about the Nobel Peace Prize 2025.

The Nobel Peace Prize for 2025 will be awarded to the Venezuelan opposition leader Maria Corina Machado, the Norwegian Nobel Committee announced earlier today. In the announcement, the committee stated that she receives the prize “for her tireless work promoting democratic rights for the people of Venezuela and for her struggle to achieve a just and peaceful transition from dictatorship to democracy. “

"This is an award to a brave champion of peace, a woman who stands up for freedom and democracy in her home country. Maria Corina Machado joins a long line of brave laureates who have fought for democracy, human rights, and peace,” says Nobel Peace Center Director Kjersti Fløgstad.

“In today’s world, we need role models like her who show us the power of individual commitment to peaceful and democratic development.", said Fløgstad.

At noon, a white peace dove was released from the windows of the Nobel Peace Center, symbolically carrying the news of the new Nobel Peace Prize laureate. Mina and Mikkel from Save the Children’s Peace Prize Party Committee participated in the release of the peace dove. They are preparing a party in honor of the Nobel Peace Prize laureate in December. They said, «Peace is important for children. Children never start wars, but they are often victims of war.”

The Nobel Peace Center is now beginning preparations for the Nobel Peace Prize exhibition 2025, which is traditionally opened by the laureate on 11 December—the day after the award ceremony in Oslo City Hall.

“We are hoping to be able to welcome Maria Corina Machado to the Nobel Peace Center in December, and we look forward to spending the coming year highlighting her work for democracy and peace. We warmly congratulate her on being awarded the Nobel Peace Prize 2025,” Fløgstad said.

The celebration of the new Nobel Peace Prize continues tomorrow, Saturday, with an event at the Nobel Peace Center. At 12:00 noon, this year's Peace Prize Diploma will be unveiled, followed by a lecture by Jørgen Watne Frydnes, Chairman of the Nobel Committee, and a panel discussion with experts on this year's prize. The event is fully booked but will be live streamed via our website.

During the weekend, the Nobel Peace Center's educators are developing a special educational programme for classroom use, ready to download both in Norway and across the world when the school children return to school on Monday morning. The educational programme is available via Nobel Education.
