This year marks 30 years since World Press Freedom Day was proclaimed by the UN General Assembly. The Nobel Peace Center, Embassy of the Czech Republic in Oslo and U.S. Embassy in Oslo want to use this 30-year anniversary to highlight our shared values in strengthening democratic norms while also addressing global threats.

At this open event, we will discuss the situation for independent journalists from Russia and Belarus, more than a year after the full-scale invasion of Ukraine. Are they able to report freely about the situation in Ukraine? How can independent journalists continue their work from exile and what can the international society do to support them?

You will meet:

Lola Tagaeva: Founder and Editor-in-chief, Verstka, an independent Russian publication that was launched last April in response to the clampdown on Russian media after the full-scale invasion of Ukraine.

Aliaksandra Pushkina, director of communications at Zerkalo.io (formerly TUT.BY, which used to be the largest media outlet in Belarus before it was closed down by the authorities in 2021). Aliaksandra is one of the founders of Zerkalo, and their public spokesperson.

Jamie Fly, President and CEO of Radio Free Europe / Radio Liberty.

Moderator: Ingvill Bryn Rambøl, Nobel Peace Center
