Event
Mela Classic Saturday
Place: Nobel Peace Center
Let yourself be enticed by South Asia's classic sounds and suggestive qawwali rhythms; two musical traditions that have developed over centuries. MelaClassic takes place at the Nobel Peace Center. Most of what you will hear on MelaClassic is from the northern tradition of South Asian music, where rag (melody) and tal (rhythm) are central. In contrast to the southern Carnatic tradition, one finds much more influence from Sufism and Islam in the north!
Program
14:00 Abu Fareed Qawwal
This year you can experience Fareed Ayaz, Abu Muhammad Qawwal & Brothers both on the main stage, and get a more intimate concert experience at MelaKlassisk. The group is led by Fareed Ayaz, together with his younger brother Abu Muhammed, while other brothers and family members make up the rest of the musical core. In familiar qawwali style, the music is performed by powerful vocalists, who go through several verse-chorus sequences supported by other singers, as well as harmonium, tabla, dholak and clapping. The group performs both classical qawwali repertoire, as well as semi-classical forms such as tarana, thumri and khayal.

Rohini Sahajpal is the country's leading performer of the Indian sitar. She comes from a musical family with deep roots in Indian classical music, her father is the multi-instrumentalist Shri Lal Sahajpal and her brother Jai Shankar plays the tablas.
