Navi Pillay was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for her groundbreaking contribution to the development of a global legal order and her efforts to ensure that those responsible for war crimes and genocide are held accountable.

She grew up under apartheid in South Africa and later served as a judge at the tribunal established after the genocide in Rwanda. In 2025, she chaired an independent UN commission that concluded that Israel was committing genocide in Gaza.

Today, international law and the institutions that uphold it are under intense political pressure. In this lesson, students will explore the challenges facing the world and how international rules and institutions can contribute to peace.

This lesson was developed in collaboration between the Nobel Peace Center and Norwegian public broadcaster NRK.
