Our Shared Responsibility for a Better World
Policy for Sustainability and Social Responsibility at the Nobel Peace Center
The Nobel Peace Center has, since 2005, told the moving and inspiring stories of the Nobel Peace Prize laureates, bringing topics of war, peace, and conflict resolution to the forefront for all visitors. Our mission is to inspire a better and more peaceful world, and in doing so, encourage everyone to contribute to the work for peace and democracy. This means that sustainability, in its widest sense, is central to everything we do.
Mission
Through exhibitions, events, communication, and educational programs, we help inform and inspire both those who visit us and those who encounter us elsewhere about significant global challenges. Most of the topics we engage with are linked to the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Through our activities, we aim to give the public new insights and inspire them to see opportunities for themselves to help solve our shared challenges.
Children and Youth
Children and youth are a key target group for the Peace Center, and we actively work to reach as many children and young people as possible with messages about peace, human rights, democracy, and dialogue. We do this both physically at the center and by offering digital resources that teachers can use in classrooms worldwide.
Equality, Diversity, Inclusion, and Engagement
We actively work for equality, diversity, and inclusion both among staff, at events, and in professional activities. We strive to include and engage a wide range of voices in exhibition production and program activities. We take social responsibility by offering free admission and guided tours to people with asylum seeker or refugee status, as well as those participating in various employment training programs. We also support employee development, offering flexible working hours and home office arrangements to meet the need for flexibility.
Universal Design
The Peace Center strives to offer a well-designed, universally accessible museum, where guests with reduced mobility, vision, or other challenges feel included and gain the greatest possible benefit from the experience.
The Shop
We set strict requirements for ethics and environmental responsibility for all our suppliers. The products in the shop are selected based on criteria for sustainability and ethics. For some products, all profits go directly back to the producers. In addition, our product range is itself intended to inspire sustainable choices.
Waste and Reuse
The Nobel Peace Center works to reduce the amount of waste by using less packaging and reusing materials, including for exhibition production where possible. We serve tap water and refrain from using bottled water at events and meetings. All waste is sorted at the source.
Food and Food Waste
At events, we always offer vegetarian options and work with climate-smart solutions for catering. To avoid food waste, we strive to order the "right" quantity and find uses for leftovers through various channels.
Energy and Climate
We are housed in a protected building that has its limitations, but in cooperation with the property owner, we have implemented energy-saving systems and solutions to reduce energy consumption.
Travel and Climate
The Peace Center’s travel policy requires employees to travel in the most climate-friendly way possible. Wherever feasible, our staff and visiting guests should use CO2-efficient solutions for travel. We have bicycle parking and none of our employees have parking spaces at work.
